Candle Care Tips: How to Get the Best Burn from Your HZLL Arts Candle

A beautifully crafted candle does more than fill a space with fragrance, it sets a mood, creates warmth, and transforms a house into a home. At HZLL Arts, we take pride in our handcrafted soy wax candles with cotton wicks, designed to offer a clean, long-lasting, and luxurious burn. To ensure you get the most from your candle, follow these essential candle care tips for a safer, more enjoyable experience.

1. The First Burn: Setting the Foundation

The first time you light your soy wax candle, allow it to burn until the wax melts evenly across the entire surface. This prevents tunnelling, where wax builds up around the wick, shortening the candle’s lifespan. We recommend burning between three to four hours on for your first burn.

2. Trim the Wick for a Clean, Even Burn

Before each burn, trim your wick to approximately 1/4 inch (6mm). This prevents sooting, uneven burning, and excessive flickering, ensuring a steady flame. A wick that’s too long can cause the candle to burn too quickly, while a wick that’s too short may struggle to stay lit.

3. Burn Time Matters: Avoid Overheating

For optimal performance, burn your candle for no more than four hours at a time. Burning too long can cause the wax to overheat, affecting the fragrance throw and potentially reducing the candle’s lifespan. If you plan on enjoying your candle for an extended period, let it cool before relighting.

4. Keep Your Candle in the Perfect Spot

Where you place your candle matters! Always burn it on a stable, heat-resistant surface, away from drafts, open windows, and flammable materials. Drafts can cause uneven burning and excessive flickering, while direct sunlight may alter the fragrance and cause discoloration.

5. Extinguishing Your Candle Properly

Blowing out a candle may seem like the easiest option, but it can create unwanted smoke and push wick debris into the wax. Instead, use a candle snuffer or gently dip the wick into the melted wax and straighten it again; this minimises smoke and keeps your wick primed for the next burn.

6. Reaching the End: How to Prepare Your Vessel for Reuse or Refill

Once only 1/2 inch (12mm) of wax remains at the bottom of the vessel, it’s time to stop burning. Instead of discarding your handcrafted vessel, why not repurpose or refill it?

To prepare your vessel for a wax refill:

  • Allow the remaining wax to fully cool and harden.
  • Gently scrape out any leftover wax and remove the wick base.
  • Wipe the inside clean with a dry cloth or warm, soapy water if needed.
  • Ensure there are no cracks in the vessel, a cracked vessel is not appropriate for a wax refill. Please discard and purchase a new candle.
  • Providing your vessel is in good condition and appropriately cleaned, it is now ready for a new wax refill, extending its life while keeping your favourite fragrance in rotation.

Alternative ways to repurpose your vessel:

  • Use it as a mini planter for succulents or herbs.
  • Transform it into a stylish key or jewellery holder.
  • Store small items like cotton rounds, stationery, or trinkets.

By refilling or repurposing, you’re not only extending the life of your candle vessel but also making a sustainable choice for your home.
